The relaunched GI Joe line from IDW has at least one winner in Fred Van Lente and Steve Kurth’s GI Joe. With a decidedly “ripped from the headlines” approach to the story (small-town America is in shambles! Terrorists are using social media against us!), Van Lente has started off the series strong. It’s a funny mix of four-color heroics and gritty military exploits, which doesn’t always work too well (see, well, the GI Joe films), but here, it’s in a world where it’s all believable. I’m definitely looking forward to more—but I hope Van Lente brings back the cartoon’s conceit of having Quick Kick speak entirely in movie quotes.
